The colors really flow well on this. It's very pretty.

Thank you, I'm glad the colors work. It wasn't easy for me to evoke the feeling of firelight, especially as I did not want it very dark.

And for some reason the thing that really stands out to me are their boots. You do very nice boots.

I noticed the boots first, too! I like them. :D

The painting sets a really nice mood, and I love John & Rodney's expressions.
Jan. 4th, 2010 04:44 pm (UTC)
Thank you. I'm glad to hear the mood works. I had a hard time with the firelight at first.

Ooh watercolours! Very nice! So many details to see!
Jan. 4th, 2010 04:51 pm (UTC)
Thank you. I'm glad the details work for you. I tried to make the scene look real and lived in without it being too cluttered.

Thank you. It's great to hear the happy team sentiment came through.

OMG! I love Rodney's hand resting on John's chest, and they way that everyone looks so comfortable and relaxed. You've put a wonderful amount of detail into it, and I love the colouring, the warm glow of the campfire.

And you even have them making s'mores</i! Another one of my favourite things! Thank you mystery artist! ♥

I am glad you like your gift, and that it matches what you wanted. I wanted to make it look a lived in scene like out of a narrative so I put in all these details I imagined at a campside (I actually never made s'mores, they just aren't eaten here), and tried to convey the campfire light impression in color without making it too dark. So I'm happy to hear this worked for you.

BTW, if you like, I could send you the hi-resolution scan of this via email, so that you could have it in printing quality and see the detail.

Ronon and Teyla look to be having a really interesting conversation there, which makes me wonder what they are discussing (hatching a prank, perhaps?). John and Rodney look very relaxed and happy.I like your attention to detail - the food, and camping supplies and (as mentioned) boots!
Jan. 4th, 2010 05:16 pm (UTC)
Thank you. I wanted to make it look like part of a narrative and give it a real feel of things happening, so I included the little details. I'm glad this worked.

The colouring and the textures of this piece are wonderful! There are so many lovely details. I especially liked the fire and the circle of light it casts compared with the dark blue forest. (And the fact that everyone is happy and smiling.) :)
Jan. 4th, 2010 05:19 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I'm glad the happy team feeling I was going for comes across, and that the firelight works. It was quite hard for me to paint fire, so I'm happy it worked out for the mood.
Dec. 18th, 2009 04:04 pm (UTC)
Gosh, this is cozy. :D I love the sense of place, here: all the little campsite details (the bag of marshmallows is awesome), the warm colors in the circle around the fire, and the cool, darker shades of the forest behind them. There's a great mood to the piece! Posing's pretty great too, and Teyla looks like she really can't wait to eat that marshmallow.. ;)
Jan. 4th, 2010 05:23 pm (UTC)
Thank you. I was trying to convey a sense of narrative, and making scene look real and lived in with the details, so I'm glad to hear this worked for you. And it was the first time I tried to paint such firelight, so it's great to hear the mood works.
Dec. 18th, 2009 04:31 pm (UTC)
I haven't seen SGA but this is great--there's so much to look at! I love all the details. And dude, you drew the sole of that boot awesomely. :D
Jan. 4th, 2010 05:26 pm (UTC)
Thank you! The soles of the boots were certainly easier than the laces. I kept getting tangled up in the over/under pattern of those, loosing the place (when I thought I had mastered the shoelace principle with five... lol)
Dec. 18th, 2009 06:15 pm (UTC)
I really like the atmosphere of this--the colors, the detail, the texture, all make it so cozy and warm.
Jan. 4th, 2010 05:28 pm (UTC)
Thank you. This was the first time I tried painting campfire light, so I'm happy to hear the atmosphere works.

The warm, cozy and companionable mood set in this piece and all the little, well-thought out details really make this stand out to me, even if I'm not exactly in SGA fandom. John and Rodney's pose looks loving and comfortable, and now I just wish I could have some S'mores, too ♥
Jan. 4th, 2010 05:32 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it even though it isn't your fandom. I've never actually eaten (or even seen) any s'mores myself. The first time I encountered them in fic I was so confused. So I'm glad the details work, even though my knowledge of them comes only from the internet. *g*

I love the watercolor look of this. and john/rodney is SO ADORABLE! I love it! :D :D :D
Jan. 4th, 2010 05:37 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I'm happy to hear that.
Dec. 20th, 2009 07:05 pm (UTC)
HOLY GOD! The details you got into this are freaking aamzing. The crushed beer can! Heck, that's awesome. All the little touches (the boots, you got the ringlets on the boots! Wow!)Great art!
Jan. 4th, 2010 05:40 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I'm glad to hear the details work for you. I wanted to give it a lived in, real feeling of a camp site, and a sense of narrative, so I included all the little stuff like open packages, a crushed can and so on.
Dec. 20th, 2009 09:09 pm (UTC)
Smores! OH, this is so snuggly! It reminds me of the very best picture books, it's done in such a thorough and color-rich style. You took a lot of dull, boring colors (lots of blacks and browns thanks to nature and uniforms)and made them vibrant and varied and just a beautiful mix. The fire is particularly stunning.
Jan. 4th, 2010 05:46 pm (UTC)
Thank you. I'm so glad to hear the colors work for you. This was the first time I tried to paint a campfire, so it wasn't easy for me, and I felt quite apprehensive about the effects.
Dec. 20th, 2009 10:28 pm (UTC)
Aww, this is so adorable! Agreed with the people above: you draw really nice boots; they immediately jumped out for me. Also love the fire, and, for some reason, John's hair. :D
Jan. 4th, 2010 05:49 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I'm glad you like the fire, because that was the first time I really tried to paint one, so it's good to hear it works.
Dec. 23rd, 2009 04:29 pm (UTC)
Making s'mores, hee! The idea of Ronon dealing with them makes me very happy. *g* Nice work!
Jan. 4th, 2010 05:52 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I actually never had s'mores myself (they aren't eaten here afaik), but they together with the camping are something of a fanon staple, so that it immediately came to mind when seeing the request for fluffy team bonding.
Dec. 23rd, 2009 06:32 pm (UTC)
What a lovely and cosy scene! And I really like your use of colours, well done!
Jan. 4th, 2010 05:55 pm (UTC)
Thank you! This was the first time I tried painting a campfire scene, so I'm glad to hear the colors work for you.
Jan. 3rd, 2010 08:46 pm (UTC)
Nawww totally bonding moment! Love the details of their s'mores food and cans of soda, as well as their boots and omg issat a cooler? XD
Jan. 4th, 2010 06:04 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that is a cooler for the cans that they have somehow brought across the galaxy to Pegasus along with their plastic water bottles. Seriously while the camping is fanon, beer in cans is canon (like you can see them in the Shrine) just like the plastic bottles, which makes little sense, but that is SGA for you. *g*

I'm glad the details work for you. I tried to make the scene real and make it look like a scene from a story.
Jan. 4th, 2010 04:06 am (UTC)
The detail in this is *so cool*. You thought of everything! And they look so happy. :D
Jan. 4th, 2010 06:07 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I'm happy you like the detail. I had hoped it would make the scene look more real, and not just clutter the picture. And it's great to hear the happy mood comes across.
Jan. 5th, 2010 09:43 pm (UTC)
I love all the little details, and the cozy feel of this. Lovely.
Jan. 5th, 2010 09:58 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I'm glad it feels cozy to you.
Sep. 26th, 2010 12:58 am (UTC)
Wow, this is lovely -- I love the whimsical style, all the details, the soft colors. Such a warm and comfy scene!
Sep. 26th, 2010 02:09 am (UTC)
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it.
